So my clutch was feeling like it was going the other day. I had one of my GM techs go with me on a test drive and he agreed with me that it was on its way out. So I ordered the LS7 clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, and GTO pilot bearing to get replaced. This was a few days ago and my tech finally got to it. And there was more wrong...
A clutch plate spring broke and wore down
Ruined Flywheel
Flywheel bolts all rounded off
Look at that mirror
Also the center support bearing
There was no rubber in here.... I guess it is time to go 1 piece since the flex couplers are all cracked too
Look at that
The rear main is also going out. If you look closely the pilot bearing decided to stop being a bearing. there are no needles in there at all. Which mean the input shaft is literally shaped like a hour glass. So that needed to be replaced. The T56 requires the entire trans to be disassembled from the rear. The input shaft is literally the last thing to be replaced. I am so worried that there is more damage inside. I can’t afford the clutch job to begin with. How the fuck am i going to get back on the road.... Fuck, this is the third holiday season that has been ruined by BS. And people ask why I am a grinch during the holidays.

But do you have a new jackknife?

That sucks man. Always a terrible fear to find more than you suspected.

Is there a way to re-sleeve the input shaft without tearing it apart?

Nope, I could take it out and have it welded and recut, but it has to be taken out.

Yeah seriously

Huh?

Didn’t you ask me for a knife I was re-purposing two weeks ago, or is there another Captain Dale?

I could be confused; wouldn’t be the first time...

How does something like this even happen? Damn that is a failure.

At least you’re finding out now rather than later when more stuff could break. Sorry about the cost of parts and stuff. Good luck!

Well it sounds like it’s time to sell some body parts and a few pints of blood...

At least be glad you got some warning the clutch was going, and didn’t leave you stranded! I had to start my Z28 in first and rev match to get through the gears on a beaten up T56. The LGT was in limp mode, could barely drive it. Not sure where you live but may be worth looking into a Tick Performance T56 rebuild. Also what’s the LS7 clutch offer opposed to OEM?

Seen worse on the clutch.
Pilot too. I just slammed my input shaft back in after replacingthe bearing.
Everything else, damn dude.

So is this another contribution to GM Crap? http://oppositelock.kinja.com/gm-crap-1789403699
What if you just replaced the parts you have and see what happens? The worst outcome is that it fails worse and you can always install a salvage transmission....
If you don’t have the $$, is that so bad?

No I love GM!! I think this is mostly previous owner abuse showing up now.
No If I don’t fix everything, the same parts will fail again and quicker since they already have advanced wear. That means replacing everything I’d be replacing now again.

Look harder at my pilot bearing, its actually supposed to look like this
There is no bearing left in mine like at all.

Oh fuck, that’d be nice, but $2,000 more for tranny work isn’t something I can do. The LS7 clutch and housing offer a slightly higher HP/TQ rating than the GTO’s parts and since they are the same engine, basically, they fit. It is the most cost effective clutch upgrade for mildly modified vehicle before needing a heavier duty aftermarket clutch like the Monster clutches.

You know anyone buying kidneys?

Mixture of abuse, wear and tear, and shoddy design. Stupid 2 piece shaft.

Yes lol that was me. I was so frustrated and such last night I read Jackknife and though like a truck jackknifing.... So yes there is an upside.

Oh wow O.o
Yep that’s pretty bad!

SERIOUSLY

Did you notice any vibration on the highway with you center carrier bushing shot like that? I was chasing a vibration on mine (2004 GTO, T56) and it has been narrowed down to that bushing. I have the new part to replace it (don’t have to get a new ds, despite GM calling it a non-serviceable part), just haven’t gotten around to it.
Also, I’m at 138k miles and drove year-round in MN. What’s your car like?

I started feeling something a while back, but it was off and on and then I thought, well maybe it’s just shitty roads, but it was getting worse, so I think all that was the carrier, but when I looked before, it looked ok, but I think that I missed it.
Mines an ‘06 T56 and I have 45,000 miles on it only.... So yeah I don’t know whats up with it. I got it at 1ok, but I think the previous owner must have beaten her hard those first 10. I have been trying my best to make her perfect and faster, but it is alway break here, broke there, and empty wallet all the time.
Yeah GM does weird stuff that they don’t service separately. It’s odd to see it working for a Dealer in parts.

I thought I was the second owner when I bought mine at 33k miles, but apparently there were two before me. I think she also got ridden very hard (rev limiter was set at 6800rpm for example). I’ve been pretty darn lucky, though.
I think that for a lot of the rubber stuff, they degrade over time regardless of miles.
It was a little shocking to see that much driveshaft movement and think of how fast I’ve gone when it was (probably already) like that. As long as you’re in there, it would be a good time to replace the diff mount bushing, too. That’s on my list, sitting in a box. I’m guessing the rear springs are sagging, too?

Yeah, previous owners suck. I wish I could have bought this car new..
I think I will do that. No, someone put lowering springs so I think they are ok, but too low for my tastes. Someday I will get adjustable coilovers.
